Melbourne: A family is facing a tough time after a fire wrecked their home, all because of some Christmas tree decorations. It’s heartbreaking.
The fire hit their two-storey townhouse on Sunday night, and it was a total loss. The mom shared that they’re safe, but everything happened so fast. She said, “Christmas is ruined, literally.”
A friend of the family, Maria, started a GoFundMe to help them get back on their feet. She wants to raise money for George, Roula, and their two daughters, who lost everything.
They had lived in that house for 24 years, filled with memories. George was home with their daughters, aged 16 and 3, when the smoke alarm went off. He saw the Christmas tree on fire and tried to save it.
He managed to get the girls out safely but got burned on his feet and arm in the process. Sadly, the townhouse is beyond repair and will have to be demolished.
The GoFundMe has already raised over $19,000, but they’re aiming for $50,000 to help replace what they lost just before Christmas.
The fire also affected nearby homes, and it took 38 firefighters nearly an hour to get it under control. Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed that the cause was indeed the Christmas tree decorations.
