Sydney: This Christmas Day, lifeguards are on high alert. With big crowds and massive surf expected, it’s shaping up to be a chaotic day at the beach.

New South Wales beaches, from Illawarra to the Mid North Coast, are under a hazardous surf warning. Sydney’s beaches could see swells up to four meters, leading to potential closures.

Steven Pearce, CEO of Surf Lifesaving NSW, is feeling the pressure. He mentioned that this Christmas is one of the hottest in years, which adds to the risk with large surf conditions.

He’s really concerned about the challenges this will bring for beachgoers, whether they’re locals or visitors. Lifeguards are urging everyone to swim only between the yellow and red flags.

Sadly, all 17 drownings in the state this year happened away from patrolled areas. Just recently, a woman drowned at Werri Beach, and a man lost his life at Crescent Head.

With the warm weather, popular spots like Bondi are expected to be packed. Pearce warns that if a beach is closed, it’s for a good reason, so folks should steer clear.

He explained that the large swell will create dangerous rips, making swimming risky. If you’re planning to drink, it’s best to stay out of the water altogether.

Rock fishermen are also being advised to stay away from hazardous areas. Pearce emphasized that these conditions can be treacherous, and wearing a lifejacket is a must if you decide to fish.

With thousands heading to the beach, anyone who sees someone in trouble should call Triple-0 immediately. Over 1,000 volunteer lifesavers will be on duty along the coast, ready to help.

While Perth beaches are also expecting big swells, Queensland and Victoria will have more moderate conditions. Stay safe out there!
