Beijing: So, China’s commerce ministry just dropped a proposal to tighten export rules on some tech used for battery parts and critical minerals like lithium and gallium. This news came out on Thursday, and it’s a big deal.
If these restrictions go through, they’ll add to a growing list of export limits that China has already put in place. They’re really trying to keep a grip on the tech and minerals where they hold a strong position globally.
The new rules would tweak existing restrictions to cover more tech used in making battery components, especially cathodes, and the methods for extracting lithium. They’re also looking to limit some gallium extraction tech.
Right now, the proposal is open for public feedback until February 1, but there’s no word on when these changes might actually kick in.
These restrictions could really shake things up for big Chinese battery companies like CATL, Gotion, and EVE Energy, especially if they’re serious about expanding overseas.
Oh, and just a heads up, Donald Trump is set to be sworn in as U.S. President later this month. He’s been talking about using tariffs and trade restrictions, especially against China, so it’s a pretty tense time for international trade.
