Derbyshire: A couple just bought a 42-metre-high chimney at auction. They paid £3,000 for this Grade-II-listed former mill chimney in Milford.
Laura and Lee Gregory from Chellaston made the purchase. Laura was the highest bidder in a live-streamed auction. She called it a surprise birthday gift for her husband.
They plan to turn the chimney into a quirky studio space. The chimney has a four-metre diameter and holds special family significance for Laura.
Laura’s great-grandmother worked at the mill in Milford. She felt thrilled to buy the chimney, which connects their family history.
They hope to get planning consent to preserve the chimney’s original condition. They want it to remain part of history for future generations.
This brick chimney dates back to 1901. It’s part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, built during the Industrial Revolution.
Andrew Parker, the auctioneer, called it an extraordinary property. He noted the unique story of Laura’s family connection to the mill.
He wished the couple luck and hopes they enjoy their new piece of Derbyshire heritage.
