Perth: The first weekend of strict new knife laws in Western Australia has led to some shocking discoveries. Police have been seizing knives and other weapons from kids.
These new laws kicked in over the weekend, allowing officers to stop and search anyone for hidden weapons without needing a warrant. It’s a big deal, especially with the holiday season coming up.

WA Police are really stepping up their game. They’re using non-invasive scanners to check people on the streets during this busy time of year. In just the first weekend, they scanned over 4,000 people and found all sorts of weapons, including tomahawks and machetes.
They even seized 21 weapons from party areas and shopping centers, with one blade measuring a whopping 20cm. That’s just wild!
WA Police Minister Paul Papalia described the situation as both “disturbing” and “reassuring.” He couldn’t believe that someone would be walking around with a tomahawk. It’s a bit scary, right?
In total, police took 11 weapons from Northbridge, two from Fremantle, and the rest from other areas. This crackdown is inspired by Jack’s Law in Queensland, which aims to help officers detect weapons more easily.
Mr. Papalia emphasized that knife crime can tear families apart. No parent should have to go through the heartache of losing a child to violence. These new laws are meant to help officers catch offenders before they can do any harm.
Those caught with a knife could face serious consequences, including up to three years in jail and hefty fines. It’s a tough stance, but it’s necessary to keep the community safe.
