Bristol: Parents are really worried about the potential cuts to lollipop ladies in the city. These crossing patrols are crucial for keeping kids safe as they head to school.

It’s wild to think that such a small budget cut could put children at risk. The council is looking to save money, but many parents feel this is a step in the wrong direction.

At St Anne’s Infants School, parents were shocked to hear the news. One mom, Barbara, said she didn’t know about the cuts and called it a “terrible loss.” She really appreciates the lollipop ladies for their help during busy times.

Another parent, Bianca, couldn’t believe it either. She pointed out how busy the roads are, especially in the mornings. It’s a dangerous spot, and losing the patrols could lead to accidents.

Jo, another concerned parent, warned that cutting these services could endanger kids’ lives. She uses that crossing every day and knows how important it is to have someone there.

Across Bristol, the reaction has been similar. Many people are upset about the proposal, which seems to be buried in a larger budget document. Other cuts, like libraries and council tax benefits, are getting more attention.

It’s not the first time Bristol has faced this issue. Back in 2017, there was a big uproar when the council tried to cut funding for lollipop ladies. After protests from kids and parents, they managed to keep some patrols in place.

Now, the council is back at it again, looking to save around £114,000 in the next year. But with a £52 million funding gap, it feels like a drop in the bucket.

People are scratching their heads, wondering why the council would cut something so vital. It seems counterproductive, especially when they’re trying to promote walking and cycling.

As discussions continue, there’s still hope that the lollipop ladies might be saved. School leaders are being cautious about speaking out, but many are worried about the potential impact on safety.

Even local politicians are voicing their concerns. Cllr Tom Renhard from the Labour group said that one serious injury is too many and that these cuts could put children in harm’s way.
