Brisbane: One of the worst pedophiles in Australia is trying to appeal his life sentence. Ashley Paul Griffith, a former childcare worker, thinks his sentence is too harsh.

Griffith, 46, was sentenced to life in prison last October after admitting to a shocking number of sexual offenses over nearly two decades. He pleaded guilty to 307 charges, including 28 counts of rape involving young children.

His lawyers have filed an appeal, claiming the sentence is “manifestly excessive.” They argue that his crimes weren’t as violent as those of other offenders who received life sentences.

The appeal was submitted before Christmas, but it hasn’t been heard in court yet. It could take a while before it gets sorted out.

During the trial, the judge highlighted how depraved Griffith’s actions were. He targeted children while they were asleep or took them to secluded spots in childcare centers.

Griffith filmed most of his assaults, and the judge expressed concern that these videos could circulate online forever. He even mocked the children when they complained about his abuse.

Many victims and their families shared their pain in court, describing how Griffith’s actions shattered their lives. The judge noted the lasting harm caused to the victims and their loved ones.

Griffith was arrested in 2022 after police found thousands of child abuse images and videos at his Gold Coast home. He’s also wanted for similar offenses in New South Wales.
