Chelmsley Wood: Residents can voice their opinions on a new crime crackdown. This follows reports of masked criminals with knives in the area. Over 100 calls were made to police in just four months last year.
The area has CCTV, but criminals often hide their faces. Reports include knife threats, vandalism, thefts, and fights. Electric bikes are also being used dangerously.
Last month, a local councillor proposed a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). This would last three years and restrict certain activities in a designated area, including the bus interchange and nearby fast food restaurants.
The PSPO would ban riding bikes or scooters in the area. Groups of three or more must leave if they cause a nuisance. An authorized person can ask someone to remove face coverings if they seem suspicious.
Breaking the PSPO could lead to a £2,500 fine. The local council and police support this plan. Councillor Wazma Qais believes it will help reduce anti-social behavior.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation. It includes seven questions and takes about five to ten minutes to complete. Feedback is crucial for making effective changes.
Residents can also report anti-social behavior to the council hotline. Green Party councillor Shesh Sheshabhatter noted that many feel unsafe due to hidden identities linked to crime.
The consultation started on February 3 and runs for six weeks, ending on March 16. You can find it online to share your thoughts.
