Change for Families’ Lengthy Autism Diagnosis Wait
A new strategy aims to reduce the long wait for autism diagnoses and support for families across Australia

Perth: Monique Forde first realized something was off with her eldest son when a childcare worker pointed it out. After years of waiting and seeing various medical experts, her son and two younger kids were diagnosed with autism.
Living in Madeley, Ms. Forde shared that this long journey is pretty common for parents who suspect their child might be on the spectrum. Autism can really affect how kids interact and communicate.
She mentioned, “The delays in getting diagnosed and the wait for therapy support are huge issues.” By the time families finally get help, their kids are often already pre-teens.
“You end up starting way later than you should, and it’s not your fault,” she added. With the launch of Australia’s first National Autism Strategy, she hopes things will change for many families.
This new plan kicks off in January and will run until 2031. It’s a big deal because it aims to improve the lives of autistic individuals, focusing on their wellbeing, social and economic inclusion, and access to services.
“It’s really needed,” Ms. Forde emphasized. “Young people need support now, before they leave home and enter the community.”
She believes that without proper support, these kids might struggle to find their footing in the world, whether it’s holding down a job or just fitting in.
Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth said this strategy could be a game-changer for autistic Australians. “It’s about time we tackle the barriers they face in education, employment, and diagnosis,” she stated.
To make this happen, $42.3 million will be allocated for practical steps. This includes $19.9 million over four years for a peer support program and $2.8 million for a study on autism prevalence in Australia.
