OTTAWA: So, it looks like Elon Musk is stirring the pot in Canadian politics. Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge is pretty concerned about it. She mentioned that with Musk’s recent actions and the changes at Meta, the CBC’s role is more crucial than ever.
St-Onge pointed out that this isn’t just about political sides. It’s about protecting a vital source of information for Canadians, especially when foreign billionaires are influencing our news landscape.
She’s worried that Poilievre, the Conservative Leader, doesn’t get how serious this is. Musk, who’s been quite vocal about his political views, has been taking shots at Prime Minister Trudeau while praising Poilievre.
St-Onge said it’s alarming to see a billionaire meddling in our elections. With social media being such a big part of how we get our news, she believes we can’t trust these platforms anymore.
Meta’s recent decision to ditch fact-checking for user-generated “community notes” is another red flag. Experts are saying this could lead to more misinformation, which is definitely not what we need.
St-Onge emphasized that communication is key to democracy. The Liberal government has had its share of clashes with Meta, especially after the company blocked news content in response to new legislation.
As the Liberals gear up for a leadership race, Poilievre is promising to defund the English-language CBC if he gets into power. He’s been a bit coy about Musk’s endorsement but did say it would be great if Musk opened factories in Canada.
St-Onge didn’t hold back, accusing Poilievre of cozying up to Musk. She’s worried he’s willing to sell out Canada to tech moguls and jeopardize our independent news system.
She also highlighted that defunding the CBC would mean losing a major employer for Canadian journalists, especially at a time when Trump is making bold claims about Canada.
With Musk involved in Trump’s plans, St-Onge is concerned that platforms like X aren’t reliable sources of information. She believes they’re more focused on profits than on providing accurate news.
It’s a pretty wild situation, and it seems like the stakes are high for Canada’s media landscape.
