Carlisle, Palestinian Territories, OBE, Martin Daltry, British Council

Carlisle: A local man, Martin Daltry, has just been awarded an OBE. He’s been doing some amazing work in the occupied Palestinian territories, focusing on education and culture.

Born in Carlisle, Martin lived in Burgh-by-Sands until 2003. He’s been recognized for his efforts to boost UK cultural relations in Palestine. Pretty cool, right?

He went to Caldew School and later studied philosophy and Middle Eastern studies. In 1998, he joined the British Council, which is all about cultural and educational opportunities.

Over the years, he’s worked in several countries, including Egypt and Turkey. But for the last six years, he’s been back in the Palestinian territories as the director.

Martin has teamed up with the Palestinian Ministry of Education to improve English teaching in schools. He’s also helped over 100 young Palestinian academics, including many PhD students, to study in the UK since 2018.

He’s been involved in projects to protect Palestinian heritage and has supported local artists and creatives. It’s all about connecting people and sharing culture.

Martin feels lucky to have worked with so many dedicated individuals in the region. He believes their collective efforts have made a real difference in education and cultural identity.

He humbly accepts the OBE, saying it reflects the hard work of many people. His father, Tony, who was a health authority manager, is now 93 and living in Langwathby.
