Barmouth: So, there’s this carer, Danielle Swaine, who really crossed the line. She took £8,000 from a vulnerable person she was supposed to help. Instead of using the money for its intended purpose, she splurged on holidays and gifts for herself. Can you believe that?
Initially, she was just supposed to buy incontinence pads for her client, Mrs. Barratt. But things took a turn, and her spending went through the roof. The judge even said she could be rehabilitated, giving her a suspended sentence instead of jail time.
It all started when Mrs. Barratt didn’t like the pads provided by community nurses. So, Swaine was allowed to use her bank details for Amazon purchases. But then, neighbors got worried about how Mrs. Barratt was being treated. After a police investigation, it turned out Swaine had spent a whopping £10,141.53, with only a small portion actually going to those pads.
Her spending jumped from £458 in October to over £2,400 by April, the month Mrs. Barratt passed away. Swaine claimed she didn’t realize she was using the victim’s card for her own stuff. She said shopping was her way of coping with stress. But still, that’s no excuse!
Her lawyer argued that it wasn’t meant to be fraudulent at first, but it spiraled out of control. Swaine had been a carer for six years and was well-regarded until this incident. She even paid back some of the money once the concerns were raised.
The judge made it clear: she had to repay the money or face prison. He ordered her to pay nearly £5,000 in compensation and wear an electronic tag for three months. Plus, she has to attend rehab sessions and a mental health program. It’s a tough lesson learned, but hopefully, she can turn things around.
