TORONTO: Canada is making a big move to cut its emissions in half by 2035 compared to 2005 levels. This new target is a bit lower than what some experts suggested, but the government thinks it’s a good balance.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault mentioned that aiming for a 45 to 50 percent reduction is both ambitious and doable. He’s also keeping an eye on potential challenges, like how the new U.S. president might change climate policies.

Back in September, Canada’s Net-Zero Advisory Body recommended a more aggressive target of 50 to 55 percent. They warned that the government’s chosen range might not be enough to keep up with other countries, especially in the G7.

The government had to set this target as part of its plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. This means Canada needs to balance out the emissions it puts into the atmosphere with what it takes out.

Experts say that to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world needs to hit net-zero emissions by around mid-century. Canada’s advisory body is concerned that the country might miss its 2030 goal of cutting emissions by 40 to 45 percent, even with current plans in place.

Guilbeault emphasized that the government is committed to doing more. He wants to reassure Canadians and businesses that they’re serious about tackling climate change.

Opinions on the new target are mixed. Mark Zacharias from Clean Energy Canada thinks it’s reasonable, but he believes provinces need to step up their game too, especially with policies that promote energy-efficient technologies.

On the flip side, Caroline Brouillette from Climate Action Network Canada called the target “weak.” She feels the government missed an opportunity to set a bold vision for a cleaner economy.
