Coongul Creek: A family visiting K’Gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, had a pretty shocking experience. They found a dozen bags of rubbish just lying around on the beach and in the grassy areas. Chezy Kassanne, who often goes there with her kids, was taken aback by the mess.
She said, “I couldn’t believe how much rubbish there was. The bags were ripped open by dingoes and birds, and plastic was flying everywhere.” It’s hard to wrap your head around why anyone would leave such a mess in a beautiful spot.
The rubbish included beer bottles, soft drink containers, and all sorts of other trash. It looked like the culprits had tried to clean up but just dumped their bags when they left. What a bummer!
Chezy and her family ended up spending part of their holiday cleaning up the mess. They rebagged the litter and took twelve bags back to the mainland. “Do not ever come back,” she said, “you don’t deserve to enjoy this beautiful place if you can’t respect it.”
Authorities are getting fed up with littering, especially as more people take up camping. The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) is warning that leaving waste behind can lead to on-the-spot fines starting at $322. They’re urging everyone to pack out what they pack in.
Camping should be fun for everyone, and it’s important to keep shared spaces clean. So, if you’re heading out, remember to take your rubbish with you!
