Haverfordwest: There’s been a lot of chatter lately about a roundabout in Pembrokeshire that folks are calling dangerous. Politicians are stepping up, saying it’s time for action.
Senedd Member Paul Davies, along with councillors David Bryan and Di Clements, are pushing the Welsh Government to do something about the Salutation Square roundabout. It’s been a real headache for the community for years.
People are fed up with the traffic jams that seem to pop up all the time. It’s causing missed appointments and a lot of frustration. Mr. Davies even brought it up in the Senedd, pointing out that the A4076 is a trunk road that the Welsh Government is responsible for.
The councillors have also been in talks with Pembrokeshire County Council and reached out to Eluned Morgan MS before she became First Minister. They’re really trying to get this issue noticed.
Mr. Davies said it’s high time the Welsh Government stops passing the buck. He mentioned that local residents are tired of their concerns being brushed aside, especially since the First Minister’s office is just a stone’s throw from the roundabout.
Councillor Bryan chimed in, explaining that before the new Haverfordwest High School was built, school traffic didn’t have to go through the town center. Now, with the new school, traffic from all directions is funneled through that roundabout, causing major congestion during peak times.
He noted that from 8:30 to 9 AM and 3:15 to 4 PM, it’s a total mess. And then, the after-work traffic kicks in around 4 PM, making it even harder to get through until nearly 6 PM.
Councillor Clements added that many of his constituents are struggling to get onto the roundabout from New Road because of the constant flow of traffic from the A40. He’s worried about speed and visibility, mentioning that there have been plenty of near misses and accidents over the years.
He stressed that with all the money being spent on regenerating Haverfordwest, it’s crucial to keep traffic flowing smoothly so people aren’t discouraged from visiting in the future.
