Call After Botched Boob Job Death Sparks Health Safety Concerns
A tragic incident has led to a permanent ban on an unregistered doctor after a patient died during a breast augmentation procedure
Sydney, Australia, Jean Huang, Jie Shao, Medi Beauty Clinic, manslaughter
Sydney: A tragic story unfolded when an unregistered doctor, Jie Shao, was convicted of manslaughter after a patient died during a breast augmentation. This incident has raised serious concerns about health safety.
Jean Huang, the beauty clinic manager, passed away in August 2017 after a procedure at the Medi Beauty Clinic. She was only 40 years old. The court revealed that she suffered a cardiac arrest during the procedure.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, she was declared brain dead. The Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) has now permanently banned Shao from providing any health services, citing public safety risks.
The ban took effect on December 10 last year, and it applies to both paid and voluntary roles. The HCCC found that Shao’s actions posed a significant risk to public health.
Interestingly, Shao had just arrived in Australia days before the incident and was not registered as a doctor in either Australia or China. She had a medical degree but was not authorized to practice.
During the procedure, she administered an excessive dose of Lidocaine, which led to Huang’s tragic fate. The clinic lacked the necessary safety equipment, making it unlicensed for such procedures.
Although Shao expressed regret, the court noted that she didn’t intend to kill Huang. She received a sentence of six years and nine months, with eligibility for release in December 2026.
