Chowchilla: So, you heard about that ex-prison guard, Gregory Rodriguez? He just got hit with 64 charges of sexual abuse. Can you believe it? This guy was a correctional officer at a women’s prison in California, and he was found guilty of some pretty serious stuff.
The jury found him guilty of rape and sexual battery against 13 women. He was facing a total of 97 counts, but thankfully, the jury didn’t buy all of them. Still, it’s shocking to see how often these cases happen and how rarely the guards get punished.
Rodriguez is one of the few guards to actually face charges for this kind of misconduct. It’s a real problem in women’s prisons, and it’s about time someone is held accountable. The whole situation shows just how hard it is for survivors to come forward when they’re behind bars.
Authorities first caught wind of his actions back in December 2022. They said he might have abused at least 22 women at the Central California Women’s Facility. Rodriguez had been working in the prison system since 1995 but retired in August 2022 when investigators started looking into him.
In May 2023, he was charged with nearly 100 counts of sexual abuse. The investigation revealed a disturbing pattern. He would start with verbal harassment, then lure women to secluded spots, claiming they had appointments. He even offered them things like tobacco in exchange for sex, threatening them if they didn’t comply.
It gets worse. Back in 2014, someone reported his abuse, but instead of firing him, the prison punished the victim. Can you imagine? That woman ended up in solitary confinement while they investigated. She said it messed with her mental health big time.
After that, Rodriguez continued his abuse for years. Records show that from 2014 to 2023, women filed hundreds of complaints against staff for sexual abuse, but only four officers were actually fired. It’s just mind-boggling.
The California Coalition for Women Prisoners, who supported the victims, said it’s not just about Rodriguez. They’re calling for real changes in the system to prevent this from happening again. It’s a step in the right direction, but there’s still a long way to go.
