Bilston: This road is one of the busiest in the West Midlands, with tons of drivers using it daily. But many folks don’t realize that average speed cameras are keeping an eye on them.
These cameras are doing their job well, catching a lot of speeders each month. The Black Country New Road is the top spot for average speed camera catches, aside from the motorways.
There are cameras set up at various points along the A41 and A444. In fact, data shows that 5,705 drivers were caught speeding from January to November 2024. That’s about 130 drivers a week!
The area where most speeders get caught is between The Lunt Junction and Moxley Junction, close to Bilston. A whopping 4,671 drivers were clocked speeding there, with cameras watching both directions on this busy dual carriageway linking Wolverhampton and West Bromwich.
Another 1,034 drivers were caught between Moxley Junction and Patent Shaft Roundabout, near Wednesbury. This makes the Black Country New Road cameras the busiest in the West Midlands, outside of the motorways, so it’s a good reminder to watch your speed.
These average speed cameras were set up in various trouble spots across the Black Country and Birmingham over the past few years, and police are looking to add even more. This info came to light after a freedom of information request to West Midlands Police about where speed cameras catch the most drivers.
The worst speeding area in the whole region is between Junctions 7 and 8 of the M6, near Great Barr, with a staggering 11,477 speeders. Another hotspot is on the M6 between the M54 exit slip road near Wolverhampton and Junction 10 for Walsall.
