Bushey: Bushey Meads School recently informed parents about a teacher shortage. They are currently short-staffed in psychology, business, and politics for years 10 to 13.
To manage this, long-term supply teachers will cover at least two lessons weekly. Students will also find extra work on Google Classroom. All resources will be available online, including weekly PowerPoints.
The school acknowledged the unexpected situation. They mentioned that recruiting new staff on short notice is challenging, especially this time of year.
They understand the impact on students, especially with exams approaching. The school is actively seeking teachers for these subjects and offering after-school catch-up sessions.
They assured parents they are working hard to resolve the staffing issue. The goal is to return to a fully staffed timetable with specialized teaching soon.
Recent figures showed only 62% of the teacher training target was met for the 2024/25 academic year. The numbers were even lower in previous years.
Analysis revealed that teacher recruitment and retention in England is critical, despite a recent pay rise. The National Education Union’s leader stated that the proposed pay increase for 2025/26 is inadequate.
The Education Committee has called for targeted bursaries for subjects facing severe teacher shortages. Some schools are even dropping subjects due to this issue.
Bushey Meads School has been approached for further comments.
