Bury St Edmunds: Residents are calling for permanent safety measures on Nowton Road. They are concerned about constant speeding in the area.
The locals fear that upcoming road closures on Sicklesmere Road will worsen the speeding problem. They want action now to keep everyone safe.
The Bury St Edmunds Town Council plans to install speed warning devices on Nowton Road. This will happen while Sicklesmere Road is closed from February 17 to May 5.
However, campaigners want more than just temporary measures. They are asking Suffolk County Council for permanent solutions after the work is done.
Ian Bowers, from the Speed Awareness Nowton Road group, says temporary fixes aren’t enough. He believes speeding will continue, especially with the Sicklesmere closures.
Nowton Road is busy, especially with school children using it daily. Residents have been pushing for a 20mph speed limit for years.
Mr. Bowers shared that the group has gathered evidence showing Nowton Road is a speeding hotspot. They monitored traffic under the police speed watch scheme.
They have had a speed indicator device on the road, but it’s only temporary. It’s shared with other locations and used infrequently.
Jodie Budd, the town clerk, confirmed that a speed indicator device will be placed on Nowton Road during the Sicklesmere Road work.
Suffolk County Council mentioned they will implement some measures during the Sicklesmere closures. They plan to engage with the community for clear communication.
They will provide advance warning signs and clear diversion signs to help direct traffic. This will help motorists avoid the closures.
The council is still considering permanent measures for Nowton Road. Sicklesmere Road will be closed on weekends from February 21 to May 5.
