Buckie: The future of the Buckie Christmas Kracker looks brighter. A recent public meeting drew a big crowd, showing strong community support.
Last November, the event attracted over 2,000 people despite bad weather. It featured fun activities like a Santa’s grotto, a funfair, and a fireworks display.
However, the event faced challenges. Adam Murray, the chairman, warned that a lack of volunteers could threaten its future. Only four volunteers helped run last year’s event.
On January 30, a public meeting at the Buckie BB hall encouraged locals and businesses to help. The turnout was impressive, easing concerns about community interest.
Mr. Murray expressed gratitude for the support. He noted the need for the Kracker to adapt to changes in the community and economy.
He said, “It was great to see so many people here. We need fresh ideas to keep the Kracker going.” A follow-up meeting will be held to discuss feedback and plans.
Stewart Findlay, the vice-chairman, shared the event’s history, which started in 2011. He also highlighted the costs, which exceed £15,000 for 2024.
Major expenses include licenses, insurance, and fireworks. Fundraising and sponsorship are crucial to cover these costs.
The event benefits the local economy, generating around £40,000. Traders come from Buckie and nearby areas.
Mr. Findlay emphasized that volunteering doesn’t require a huge time commitment. Even short help can make a difference.
Various roles need volunteers, from greeting traders to litter picking. The Kracker is a year-round effort, needing ongoing support and fundraising.
