Over 18 months, he tricked two insurers into paying him £61,380. This wasn’t his first rodeo, though. Williams, previously known as Ayodele Oladuti, had a history of fraud.
Back in 2017, he was jailed for two years for trying to con clients out of over £25,000. He did this by snapping photos of their bank cards while showing them homes.
In his latest scheme, he provided fake documents claiming his accommodation canceled due to Covid-19. But AXA’s fraud investigators caught on and alerted the City of London Police.
Williams was arrested in November 2021 and eventually confessed. Aviva also got suspicious and referred him to the police in May 2022.
In one claim, he said he lost a Louis Vuitton bag with an iPhone and Rolex inside. When investigators found out about his past, he lied, saying his conviction was overturned.
In November 2023, he pleaded guilty to 16 fraud charges. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but it’s suspended for 18 months.
Detective Constable Dan Weller from the police said many faced travel disruptions due to Covid-19. Williams took advantage of that, pocketing thousands he didn’t deserve.
He even had the nerve to apologize for lying and sent forged documents the next day. Weller emphasized that travel insurance is meant for peace of mind, not personal gain.
The sentence shows that the police are serious about tackling insurance fraud. They won’t let criminals benefit from their dishonest actions.
