Laing had a huge impact on the entertainment scene, helping many stars get their start. He moved to Plymouth in the late ’80s and became a key figure at Television South West. His career was impressive, and he was well-respected in the industry.
After his surgery on January 16, 2023, he seemed to be recovering well. But just nine days later, he felt really unwell and had to go back to the hospital. Sadly, he was diagnosed with sepsis, which is a serious condition.
Things took a turn for the worse when he had to undergo emergency surgery. Unfortunately, he suffered a cardiac arrest after being put under anesthesia and passed away shortly after. The doctors said his death was due to septicemia from the surgery.
His daughter, Jemima, raised some concerns about the care he received, especially regarding the antibiotics and a major IT outage that affected communication at the hospital. She felt that the family wasn’t kept in the loop, which added to their distress.
The coroner concluded that there wasn’t any evidence to suggest that his death could have been prevented. It’s just a tragic situation, and Laing will be remembered for his incredible contributions to British television.
He was a pioneer in the industry, and his work on shows like The Golden Shot and This Morning left a lasting mark. His family and friends will surely miss his vibrant presence, and it’s a huge loss for everyone who knew him.
