Bristol: Ian Alexander is a football legend. He played for the Bristol Rovers and helped them win the third-tier title in 1990. People still recognize him in shops. He played for the love of the game, not for money.

Now, at 62, his memories are fading. He struggles to remember his teammates and even simple tasks like using a fork. Doctors suspect he has chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition linked to repeated head injuries.

Alexander wants the High Court to investigate how much football is to blame for his condition. He is one of over 30 former players taking legal action against the Football Association (FA).

The case questions how much the FA knew about the risks of head injuries over the years. They were back in court recently, facing delays and obstacles from the FA. The FA’s lawyer mentioned the challenges of gathering information during a busy football season.

Frustration grew as the former players’ lawyer pointed out that FA executives aren’t the ones playing. The FA hinted at a defense, mentioning the health benefits of playing sports. They argue that all sports come with injury risks.

The key issue is whether the FA has records showing if heading should have been limited or banned. The next court date is set for June, but the slow progress is frustrating for Alexander and his wife, Janet.

Alexander wants the case to move forward so he can enjoy the time he has left. A doctor estimated he has between two to six years to live. Anxiety makes attending football games difficult for him now.

He dreams of simple trips around Scotland and visits to brain specialists. A tattoo on his arm reads, “The mind may not remember, but the heart will never forget.”

He hopes football will remember too. Former player John Stiles is pushing for better regulations regarding head injuries in the sport. There are concerns about a potential brain disease epidemic among players.

Despite everything, Alexander says he would still choose to play football. He loved the game and has no regrets, but he wishes it had been safer. The court may ultimately decide if the football authorities neglected players’ health.
