Bridlington lifeboat’s first callout of the year to aid stricken fishing vessel off Spurn Point

Bridlington: The lifeboat crew had their first call of the year when they were asked to help a fishing boat that was having steering problems. It was drifting and could have collided with other boats near Spurn Point.

The call came in late on January 3, and the volunteers jumped into action. They launched their all-weather lifeboat, named Antony Patrick Jones, to assist the 10-meter fishing vessel that was in trouble. It was about 16 nautical miles from Spurn Point, and the situation was made worse by strong winds.

The crew of five set out just after midnight in freezing conditions. They reached the fishing boat by 1:30 am and decided to tow it back to Grimsby docks to keep it safe from other anchored vessels. Thankfully, the operation went smoothly.

After getting the fishing boat to safety, the lifeboat crew returned to Bridlington, arriving back at the beach by 9:30 am. They quickly washed down and refueled the lifeboat, getting it ready for the next call by 10:05 am.

Andy Rodgers, the coxswain, praised the team for their quick response and teamwork. He said it was a successful mission, and everyone did a fantastic job, especially considering it all started in the early hours of the morning.
