This request drew criticism from residents and political opponents. However, the Council stated it was in an “unsustainable financial position.” They emphasized that the decision was not made lightly.
On Monday, the Government granted permission for a 9.99 percent tax hike. Bradford Council has been struggling financially and received ‘exceptional financial support’ to help balance its budget. This support allows them to borrow significant amounts and use asset sales to fund services.
The Council argues that raising taxes will reduce future borrowing and interest costs. Robbie Moore, the Conservative MP for Keighley and Ilkley, criticized the tax increase. He stated it would heavily impact working families.
In his letter to Cllr Hinchcliffe, he called the rise an “insult to hardworking taxpayers.” He urged the Council to take responsibility for its financial issues and focus on essential services.
Councillor Rebecca Poulsen, leader of the Conservative and Queensbury Independents, expressed shock at the proposed increase. She criticized the Council for its financial mismanagement and lack of connection with Bradford residents.
She stated that having the highest Council tax increase in the country is not something to be proud of. Councillor Mike Pollard questioned if this would be a one-time increase. He noted that such increases often become permanent.
The Bradford Greens also condemned the tax rise, calling it “shameful.” Councillor Neil Whitaker said it unfairly burdens hardworking residents. Brendan Stubbs, leader of the Liberal Democrats, echoed these sentiments, blaming the Labour Executive for the financial crisis.
