Boy, 2, critically wounded in North Lawndale shooting

Chicago: A 2-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot multiple times in an apartment in North Lawndale. This happened on Thursday afternoon, and the police are on it.

According to the police, the little guy was shot in the lower body just after 4 p.m. Thankfully, they have a person of interest in custody. But it’s still a tough situation.

By around 4:30 p.m., a bunch of officers were outside a four-flat on West 14th Street. Detectives were going in and out of the apartment, and you could feel the tension in the air. A woman was sitting on the steps, wrapped in a blanket, just sobbing.

She kept saying, “I don’t know.” It was heartbreaking. Another woman stepped out to make a call, telling someone, “Your grandson got shot.” You could tell it was a tough moment for everyone involved.

Before heading to Stroger Hospital, where the boy was taken, she wanted to grab something from the building. But the police had to block the entrance since it was now a crime scene.

Across the street, officers were looking at a bloody towel with cartoon drawings on it that someone had placed on a squad car. A passerby asked if the child had survived, but the officers didn’t have any answers.

Then, a woman in a pink coat rushed up, saying this was her building, but she couldn’t get in either. Someone even gave her a sweatshirt to help keep her warm.

Eventually, an officer called her over and said they found a weapon in the apartment. They needed to check for any other guns inside. He handed her a clipboard and asked if she would sign a consent form.

She looked at it and said, “No, but I don’t really have a choice.” If she didn’t sign, they’d have to get a search warrant. It was a tough spot to be in.

Meanwhile, detectives were digging into the shooting. Just 45 minutes earlier, two men were shot in a drive-by while standing on a sidewalk in Humboldt Park. One was in good condition, but the other was in critical shape.

It’s a lot to take in, and the police are still investigating both incidents. Let’s hope for the best for that little boy.
