New Orleans: A horrific event unfolded on New Year’s Day, claiming at least 15 lives and injuring many others. The FBI is treating this as a terrorist attack.
The suspect, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, 42, drove his car into a crowd on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m. He was shot by police after firing at them during the chaos.
Among the injured, a student from the University of Georgia was critically hurt, though their identity hasn’t been revealed yet.
ABC News has shared the names of four victims who tragically lost their lives. First up is Tiger Bech, 27, a former Princeton football player. His mom shared that he was living his dream in New York City, but was in Louisiana for a fun weekend with friends.
Next is 18-year-old Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, who went to Bourbon Street to ring in the New Year. Her mother confirmed the heartbreaking news of her passing.
Then there’s Reggie Hunter, 37, a father of two. His cousin expressed the deep pain felt by the family, saying he was a vibrant person who had so much life ahead of him.
Lastly, Nicole Perez, 27, leaves behind a 4-year-old son. Her employer described her as a dedicated mother who was excited about her recent promotion. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries after being hit.
This tragedy has left the community in shock, and many are coming together to support the families affected.
