Borth: The village is buzzing with talk about public toilets. Residents are gearing up for a meeting to decide their fate. The council’s been hinting at possible closures, and folks are worried.

So, the big question is how much the community is willing to chip in to keep these toilets open. The council’s been struggling with costs, and they might just pull the plug if no one steps up.

The meeting is set for Monday, January 20, at 6:30 PM in the community hall. Everyone’s invited to share their thoughts and learn about what it might cost to take over the toilets.

Some locals are anxious about how this could affect businesses and tourism, especially since the beach has a blue flag status for cleanliness. Others are concerned about the potential hit to their council tax if they take on this responsibility.

Councillor Hugh Hughes mentioned that running both sets of toilets year-round could be a hefty expense. In early 2024, the council reached out to all towns, asking them to consider managing their public toilets to save money.

There’s a big gap between what it costs to run these facilities and the income they generate—around £200,000. Some councils, like Aberaeron, have already said they can’t take on the responsibility.

Meanwhile, Machynlleth Town Council just reopened its toilets after dealing with vandalism issues. Borth has faced its share of trouble too, with vandalism causing significant damage in 2022.
