Bored Lambeth Kids Need Youth Clubs, Not Chicken Shops, Says Campaigner
A local campaigner urges Lambeth council to open youth clubs for kids instead of leaving them to hang out in chicken shops

Nickie, who’s 54, believes this space could be a game-changer for local kids. Many of them come from low-income families and don’t have safe places to play. The community center, known as the One O’clock Club, could offer activities and a safe hangout spot. But the council hasn’t been responsive to their requests.
Instead of helping, the council plans to charge a commercial rent for the building, which is way out of reach for Nickie and her team. She mentioned that kids are turning to chicken shops because they have nowhere else to go. It’s frustrating because there are dedicated youth workers ready to step in and make a difference.
Nickie pointed out that other similar buildings in the area have been given to operators for free. She and her group have big plans for the center, like play sessions for little ones and activities for teens. There’s a real need for this kind of space, especially with so many families living nearby.
Ben Rhymer, another local advocate, echoed her concerns. He said there are about 35,000 people living within a mile of the park, and the community center could really benefit everyone. It’s a missed opportunity if it stays closed.
Ida Turner, a local resident, added that the area desperately needs a community hub. Right now, kids have to store their tennis equipment in a bin store when it rains because there aren’t proper facilities. Lola Oloyede, who runs educational activities for kids, mentioned she has to turn kids away daily due to high demand.
The council hasn’t commented yet, but the community is hopeful for a change. Everyone is rooting for a place where kids can gather, play, and feel safe.
