Bombay: So, the Bombay High Court is stepping up to protect wetlands in Maharashtra. They just kicked off a public interest litigation all on their own, which is pretty cool.
This move comes after the Supreme Court told all high courts to get involved in safeguarding these important wetland areas. The court’s order was issued back in December, and now the Bombay High Court is taking it seriously.
The judges, Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar, have already sent notices to the Union Ministry of Environment and the Maharashtra government. They even brought in a senior lawyer to help out with the case.
Now, wetlands are super important. They’re recognized internationally, and India has 85 of these Ramsar Convention sites. In Maharashtra, we’ve got three: Lonar Lake, Nandur Madhameshwar, and Thane Creek.
Interestingly, the Supreme Court pointed out that while the number of wetlands has increased over the years, we really need to check them out in person to see what’s going on. They mentioned that many states have been slacking on this ground inspection part.
So, it looks like the Bombay High Court is really trying to make a difference here. It’s all about keeping our environment safe and sound!
