Bombay: The Bombay High Court recently tossed out a petition that was challenging the withdrawal of 12 MLC nominations made by the MVA government back in 2020. This petition was filed by Sunil Modi from Shiv Sena (UBT). The court found the petition to be “misconceived” and decided to dismiss it.

This whole situation started when the Eknath Shinde-led government decided to pull back the nominations that were put forward by the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government. After the MVA government fell apart in 2022, the new cabinet asked the governor to withdraw the earlier nominations. The governor agreed and returned the list to the Chief Minister’s Office.

Fast forward to October 2024, the governor appointed seven new MLCs to fill those vacant spots. The ruling BJP nominated three of them, while its allies, Shiv Sena and the NCP, nominated two each.

Among the BJP’s picks are Chitra Wagh, Vikrant Patil, and Dharmaguru Babusingh Maharaj Rathod. The NCP’s nominees include former MLA Pankaj Bhujbal and Idris Naikwadi. The Shiv Sena nominated Manisha Kayande and Hemant Patil, a former Lok Sabha member.

With the court’s decision, the newly appointed MLCs can now step into their roles without any legal hurdles hanging over them. It’s a big step forward for the political scene in Maharashtra!
