An official from the BMC’s environment department mentioned that since November 1, they checked about 1,038 sites. They found issues at 856 of them. After sending out notices, they discovered that 462 sites still weren’t complying. So, they had to issue stop-work orders.
Good news, though! Out of those 462 sites, 271 got their act together and started following the guidelines. The BMC lifted the stop-work orders for them, but the other 191 sites are still on hold.
If a construction site gets a notice, they have three days to fix things. If they don’t, the work gets stopped. There are still around 2,100 private construction sites active in the city.
On another note, the BMC has decided to pause any new trench work in Mumbai. Plus, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board won’t be approving new ready-mix concrete plants either.
The guidelines are pretty strict. Construction sites need to be covered on all sides with green cloth or tarpaulin. They also have to have tall coverings, water spraying, and air quality monitoring sensors. It’s all about keeping the air clean and safe for everyone.
And don’t forget, project developers need to have an environmental management plan in place. It’s a big deal for the city’s health and safety!
