Blackpool: A 64-year-old man was taken into custody today on suspicion of being a loan shark. This happened during a police operation in the seaside town.
The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) teamed up with Lancashire Police for this operation. They executed a warrant at a property in the Warbreck area.
While searching the place, officers found electronic devices, paperwork, and cash. The man was arrested for illegal money lending and is now being questioned by investigators.
IMLT works closely with Blackpool Council Trading Standards Service to tackle illegal money lending. They’re serious about cracking down on these activities.
According to the Centre for Social Justice, about 1.08 million people in England are in debt to loan sharks. That’s a staggering number!
Dave Benbow, acting head of the IMLT, emphasized that they won’t tolerate illegal lending. He mentioned that these lenders often prey on vulnerable individuals, and they’re committed to protecting those at risk.
If you or someone you know might be dealing with an illegal lender, don’t hesitate to reach out to their team. They assure complete confidentiality.
Since its creation in 2004, IMLT has helped over 32,000 people and wiped out more than £91.3 million in illegal debt. They’ve also secured over 427 prosecutions, leading to more than 609 years of jail time for offenders.
