Newcastle: So, get this! A massive funnel-web spider just got named after the Hemsworth brothers. Yep, you heard that right! The Australian Reptile Park decided to pay tribute in a pretty wild way.
This spider is no ordinary critter. It’s a whopping 9.2 cm long, making it the biggest male funnel-web ever donated to the park. Talk about a record-breaker!
They named it “Hemsworth” after the famous brothers because, well, it’s huge! The park said its fangs are strong enough to pierce a human fingernail. Yikes!
Emma Teni, the spider keeper, was super excited about this big guy. She said getting a male funnel-web this size is like hitting the jackpot. And let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to work with a spider named after a Hollywood star?
Emma mentioned that while female funnel-webs are venomous, the males are even more dangerous. So, having Hemsworth in their collection is a big deal for their venom program.
She joked that now she can brag about working with a Hemsworth every day. It’s not every day you get to say that, right?
This spider beat the previous record-holder, Hercules, who was donated just last year. Hemsworth is definitely stealing the spotlight!
The Australian Reptile Park is encouraging folks to safely catch funnel-web spiders for their antivenom program, which saves around 300 lives each year. They’ve got drop-off zones across Sydney, the Central Coast, and Newcastle, making it easy for people to help out.
So, if you find a funnel-web spider, you can bring it right to the park or drop it off at one of their designated spots. They even provide spider safety kits to keep those little guys secure until the staff can pick them up. How cool is that?
