Birmingham: So, there’s this ex-surgeon, Dr. Mohammad Siddiqui, who got himself into a heap of trouble for doing some pretty unsanitary circumcisions on kids. He was running a mobile service, going to people’s homes to perform these procedures on children up to 14 years old.

He was 59 and had been using anaesthetic he snagged from his job, which is just wild. The guy completely ignored basic hygiene rules, showing no care for the health and safety of these young patients.

In total, he admitted to 25 offenses, including actual bodily harm and cruelty to children. The court didn’t take it lightly and sentenced him to 67 months in prison.

While he was working as a clinical fellow in paediatric surgery, he had access to prescription meds, which he misused. Even after being struck off the medical register in 2015 for earlier failures, he kept on with these unsafe practices.

The law around non-therapeutic circumcision is pretty loose, which is why he could keep doing this. Now, he’s got a serious crime prevention order hanging over him, meaning he can’t perform any circumcisions when he gets out.

A prosecutor pointed out that his actions left kids with both emotional and physical scars. It’s a real shame, as he completely disregarded the impact on the families involved.

The police investigator on the case mentioned how unusual it was for them to get involved in something like this. He was really worried about Siddiqui’s lack of insight into the harm he was causing.

The whole situation has raised a lot of questions about the safety of non-therapeutic circumcision, and hopefully, this case will help prevent any more kids from being put at risk like this in the future.
