Birmingham: A Birmingham City fan was left feeling violated after spotting a CCTV camera right above the women’s toilets during an away game. She was at Swindon Town’s County Ground when she noticed the camera while using the facilities.
She shared her shock on social media, posting a picture of the camera and saying, “Sat on the toilet at Swindon away and notice a CCTV camera right above me.” Her post quickly went viral, racking up around two million views.
Swindon Town had previously stated that the camera was equipped with a motion blur feature, ensuring that no one using the toilets would be visible. The English Football League mandates that clubs have CCTV for safety reasons.
Vicki Eyles, a fan engagement officer for Swindon, reached out to the fan, assuring her that the camera was approved by the EFL and that the digital blur was in place for privacy. However, the Birmingham fan felt uneasy, saying it made her feel exposed and violated.
She understood the need for monitoring in public areas but insisted that placing a camera above women’s toilets was inappropriate. She raised concerns about the reliability of the blur and what could happen if it failed.
This isn’t the first time the camera’s placement has been questioned. Another fan had previously raised similar concerns during a match against AFC Wimbledon. In response, Swindon acknowledged the issue and stated they would look into additional measures to address fan concerns.
