Erdington: Residents in one of Birmingham’s toughest neighborhoods are feeling a bit better lately. They’ve noticed a change thanks to more police on the streets. Over the past year, crime has really spiked, with drug-related issues and violence becoming a big problem.
The local high street has been hit hard, costing taxpayers millions due to crime. People have been asking for more police presence to help curb the chaos. Thankfully, a new police operation called Operation Fearless is stepping in, using funds from crime proceeds to make a difference.
Since it started, folks have seen more officers around, and it’s making a noticeable impact. Tam, who runs a shop nearby, mentioned that the increase in police visibility has made the area feel safer. He’s noticed fewer shoplifters lately, which is a relief for business owners.
Adrees, who works at a barbershop, echoed Tam’s sentiments, saying it’s nice to see officers around more often. The police are focusing on tackling theft, anti-social behavior, and drug issues, which have plagued the community for too long.
Det Supt Jim Munro is leading this operation, and he’s committed to working with local partners to address the community’s concerns. Residents are hopeful that this effort will continue to improve their neighborhood.
On our visit, we saw people shopping and enjoying the high street, which felt lively. Dennis, a long-time resident, shared that he feels safer with more police around, especially since his family has been hesitant to visit due to safety concerns.
Lewis, another local, pointed out the ongoing issues with homelessness and addiction, emphasizing the need for support for those struggling. He feels safe in his neighborhood but recognizes the challenges that still exist.
Det Supt Munro reassured residents that Operation Fearless is making strides, with numerous arrests and efforts to remove dangerous weapons from the streets. It’s a step in the right direction for Erdington, and the community is hopeful for a brighter future.
