The cyclone struck on Christmas Eve in 1974, with winds reaching 217 km/h. It caused massive destruction, taking down power lines and wrecking homes. The city was in chaos.
At the ceremony, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke about the disaster, calling it a harsh reminder of nature’s power. He also highlighted the strength and kindness shown by Australians during that tough time.
He mentioned how people from all over came together to help, including ADF and emergency services. Even cricketers collected donations at the Boxing Day test match, showing the spirit of giving.
Albanese praised Darwin’s resilience, noting how the community rebuilt itself with courage. The memorial unveiled at East Point Reserve serves as a reminder of that strength.
