Sydney: On Christmas Day, the Bill Crews Foundation was bustling with people. Among the crowd were familiar faces, but not the usual ones you’d expect. These were folks who had once donated to the charity, now lining up for a meal.
The foundation has been a lifeline for the homeless and those in need for 35 years, hosting a big Christmas lunch every year. This time, around 3,000 people showed up for a hot meal, thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers.
Reverend Crews pointed out a troubling trend. With the cost of living skyrocketing, more working people are seeking help. He mentioned that many of those asking for meals were once donors themselves.
“When that happens, there’s something very seriously wrong in the way the world is working,” he said. He emphasized that good leadership is crucial for supporting the most vulnerable in society.
As he spoke, a woman nearby chimed in about capitalism, highlighting the growing divide between the rich and the poor. Reverend Crews agreed, noting that the gap is widening and it’s a serious issue for society.
NSW Premier Chris Minns was also there, helping serve meals and chatting with people. He acknowledged that many Sydneysiders are struggling, especially in such an expensive city.
“It’s been a tough year for families,” he said, expressing admiration for those juggling multiple jobs just to get by. He hopes for better economic news in the coming years.
