Belfast: The city council has voted for a rates hike of 5.99%. This decision was made during a meeting tonight.

On Monday evening, the council announced the increase for the 2025/26 district rate. This means different weekly increases for property types.

For example, a terraced property will see an increase of £0.40. A three-bedroom terraced home will go up by £0.62. A four-bedroom detached house will rise by £1.37, while an apartment will increase by £0.39.

Office properties will see a £10.39 increase, and retail properties will rise by £8.51. The council may review this rate until February 15, depending on funding from the NI Executive.

Councillor Ryan Murphy, chair of the council’s committee, explained the increase is due to rising national insurance contributions. He noted that all parties worked to keep the rise as low as possible.

Murphy mentioned that the council faces ongoing pressures like inflation and pay increases. However, they have made significant savings to manage these costs.

He emphasized the importance of balancing support for communities and maintaining key services. The decision allows continued investment in parks, leisure centers, and sports facilities.

Additionally, the council plans to expand its glass recycling service to more households. They are committed to scrutinizing spending and improving service efficiency.
