Leigh: So, there’s been some troubling news from Belfairs Park. Police are looking into reports of people using catapults to harm squirrels. It’s pretty shocking, right?
Apparently, a man and two boys were spotted firing catapults last Saturday. The rural engagement officers jumped into action, patrolling the area and chatting with families and dog walkers.
Residents are really upset about this. They’ve even formed a group called the Belfairs Squirrels Protectors to gather evidence and raise awareness about these attacks.
Sergeant Paul Brady mentioned that the park is a popular spot for everyone. He stressed how dangerous it is to fire a catapult there. It’s just not safe.
Sadly, they’ve already received photos of a squirrel that seems to have been killed by a catapult. The police are determined to find out who’s behind this awful act.
Brady also pointed out that some people think it’s just harmless fun, but it’s really not. Hurting wildlife is against the law, and they need to be held accountable.
If anyone saw anything suspicious in the woods between 12:30 and 1:30 PM on Saturday, the police want to hear from you. You can reach out online or call 101. If it’s an emergency, definitely call 999.
Witnesses are encouraged to mention incident 465 from January 11 when they contact Essex Police. They want to make sure the information gets to the right person quickly.
Also, the police are running Operation Lakeshot, which aims to tackle rural crime. They’re focusing on education and preventing these kinds of incidents from happening again.
