Bedford Skateboarders Aim to Fund New Skatepark for Community
Local skateboarders are rallying support and funds to replace Bedford’s aging skatepark, hoping to create a safer, modern space for all.

Bedford: Three local skateboarders are on a mission to raise funds for a new skatepark. Tyler Sims, Chad Parkinson, and Seth Abel have kicked off the Shredford Skate Park Project to push for a fresh, all-concrete park.
They say the current skatepark is over 20 years old and has been a vital spot for the community. It’s a place where skateboarders can come together, express themselves, and improve their skills.
But the park is falling apart. The metal ramps are rusty, and the asphalt is cracked, making it unsafe for skaters. The guys from the project are really concerned about this.
“Many ramps have become damaged, dented, and rusted,” they mentioned. It’s clear that something needs to change.
They’ve even started a petition on Change.org, which has already gathered over 1,000 signatures. That’s a solid start!
Parkinson shared that they’re aiming for a new park similar to the one in Bloomington’s Switchyard Park. They’re currently looking for a new spot, but it might just be rebuilt where the old one is.
If they stay in the same area, they want to expand it to between 7,000 and 10,000 square feet. This would allow for more activities, like BMX riding and roller skating, which would be awesome for the community.
Concrete is the way to go, too. It lasts longer and needs less upkeep than what’s there now. Plus, it’s safer!
Parkinson mentioned that they have support from Bedford residents and those nearby. He’s eager to spread the word and get help with fundraising. They’re also planning to work with the mayor’s office on grant writing.
They hope to team up with Hunger Skateparks, the same folks who built the Bloomington park. This company listens to community input for their designs, which is pretty cool. Bedford has some unique ideas to incorporate, like local astronauts and limestone motifs.
Parkinson believes a well-built skatepark would be a fantastic addition to Bedford. It’s not just about skating; it’s a place for families and friends to hang out and build new friendships.
They know it’s a big task ahead, but they’re ready to work with the city and advocate for their community.
