BCP: The government is giving nearly £10 million to help with homelessness. This funding is one of the largest in the country. It aims to prevent residents from becoming homeless.
The money will provide support and accommodation for those affected. Out of the total, £8.7 million is for homelessness and rough sleeping grants for the next financial year.
Additionally, £509,000 is available to help those at risk of sleeping on the street. This amount needs to be used before April.
Kieron Wilson, the cabinet member for housing, emphasized the importance of this funding. He said they are building on their current efforts to prevent at-risk residents from losing their homes.
Wilson also mentioned the need to find new homes and consider the wider housing market. He noted that the work in this area is ongoing and they aim to reduce homelessness.
The council plans to lessen the need for families to stay in B&Bs. They are finalizing the purchase of Harbour Heights in Poole for this purpose.
Wilson welcomed the funding, stating it supports their goal of ending homelessness. He believes having a home is essential for health and well-being.
He added that they have seen a 30% increase in prevention outcomes over the last year. This funding will help them continue their efforts and provide early support to those in need.
