Alicante: Alistair Appleton was taken aback during the latest episode of I Escaped to the Country. A former guest shared his cancer journey, saying it “never came back” after moving to Spain.

On Thursday’s show, Alistair caught up with Ian and Simon, who first appeared on the program a decade ago. The couple had dreamed of leaving the UK for sunny Spain, and after their TV debut, they finally made the leap.

After showing clips from their earlier house hunt, Alistair was eager to see how they were doing in their new life. He was particularly interested in Simon’s health since the big move.

During a tour of their beautiful Spanish villa, Simon shared, “This has been the icing on the cake. I’m at the top of my peak, and I’m loving every second of it!”

He also mentioned how living in Spain has taught him to slow down and enjoy life more. Alistair asked, “And the cancer’s never come back?” Simon confidently replied, “No, no, no, no. That’s all good.”

However, viewers unfamiliar with the show’s international episodes were a bit puzzled. Some took to social media to compare it with Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun.

One fan noted, “I Escaped to the Country seems to be treading on the toes of A Place in the Sun today.” Another viewer exclaimed, “SPAIN?! I Escaped to the Country has morphed into A Place In The Sun.”

Another person chimed in, saying, “The point of moving abroad would be to get away from Brits and family for me.”

I Escaped to the Country airs weekdays at 3pm on BBC One
