Basingstoke: The annual Holocaust Memorial Day service is coming up soon. It’s a big deal this year since it marks 80 years since Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated and 30 years since the genocide in Bosnia.

The service will pay tribute to those who suffered and lost their lives. It’s a moment to remember friends and family taken by genocide.

Cllr Dan Putty, the mayor, will lead the event at 10am on Monday, January 27, right at the War Memorial by the Civic Offices.

He’ll be joined by Cllr Paul Harvey, the council leader, to lay a wreath for the borough. A bugler will also play to mark a minute of silence.

This year’s theme is ‘For a Better Future.’ It’s all about learning from the past to create a better tomorrow.

Cllr Putty emphasized how important it is to remember all victims of genocide, especially during these significant anniversaries. He wants everyone to reflect on the lessons we need to learn to ensure a brighter future for everyone.

Since 2000, Holocaust Memorial Day has been observed globally on the anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation in 1945.
