Basildon: So, there’s been some drama in Basildon. Kaspa’s dessert shop, which was a favorite hangout, has closed its doors. The council slapped a forfeiture notice on the place, and just like that, it was done.
People in town were pretty shocked. I mean, this spot was always buzzing with customers. Cllr Gavin Callaghan, the council leader, jumped on social media to explain that Kaspa’s hadn’t paid any rent at all. Can you believe that?
He mentioned that they knew the council was after them for the rent they owed. It seems like they were warned that action would be taken if they didn’t sort it out. Now, the council is looking to fill that space with someone new.
Callaghan said that Kaspa’s has been behind on rent since 2022. They signed a contract promising to pay, but it looks like they didn’t follow through. The council even tried to help them boost their business, but they turned down offers to put seating outside.
He added that if the owner can prove they’re struggling financially, there might be a chance to reopen. But if not, the council has to think about the taxpayers and find a new tenant. It’s a tough situation, but they have to do what’s best for the community.
A spokesperson for Basildon Council confirmed they’ve taken back control of the property. It’s a real shame to see a local business close like this, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
Kaspa’s hasn’t commented yet, so we’ll have to wait and see if they have anything to say about all this.
