Basildon: Big changes are on the horizon for this town. We’re talking about everything from new tower blocks to a shopping centre and health clinics. By 2025, it’s going to look quite different.
The local council has a solid plan to revamp the town centre and provide more homes for everyone. It’s about time, right?
Gavin Callaghan, the leader, is really optimistic about these developments. He believes that by the end of 2025, people will see a whole new Basildon.
He mentioned, “People say nothing ever happens in Basildon, but that’s going to change soon.”
One of the big projects is the Great Oaks development, where 245 homes are set to replace the old retail park. They started clearing the area last October.
Plans for an 11-storey tower block and shops were given the green light back in 2021, and they’re finally getting underway this year.
Another exciting project is the old Moon on the Square pub, which has been a key part of the council’s regeneration plans since it closed in September 2022. They’re planning to build 492 new flats across several towers.
And right across from that site, the empty Marks and Spencer store is also in line for a makeover, turning into flats and shops, including a B&M store.
Trafford House is also getting an upgrade, with plans to add three more storeys. They got the go-ahead in 2021, and it looks like work will finally kick off soon.
Residents will notice some changes at Eastgate too, with new developments in the shopping and business centres.
One of the most interesting projects is the transformation of the old Debenhams store into a mini hospital. It’s a unique twist for the area!
So, there’s a lot happening in Basildon, and it’s all set to make the town a better place to live and shop.
