Basildon: Labour Council leader Gavin Callaghan has shared some big news. Starting in April, the council will bring back weekly black bin collections. They’re also ditching those blue and white recycling sacks.

There have been a lot of complaints about waste collection lately. The council’s new plan is part of a £1.9 million overhaul of the waste system. This comes as they prepare for the 25/26 draft budget.

Mr. Callaghan pointed out that the previous Tory-led waste scheme, which started last November, is costing the council £2.3 million a year. So, they’re hoping this new plan will save money while keeping the streets cleaner.

Right now, black wheelie bins are only collected every two weeks, along with those multiple canvas sacks for recycling. But with the new plan, they’ll be collected weekly, which should make a big difference.

Mr. Callaghan emphasized that this change was part of their election promise. He said, “Despite being told it’s impossible, we’re making it happen.” He believes this new system will be cheaper and more efficient.

Back in November, the Conservative administration tried to improve recycling rates by making residents separate their rubbish. But that plan didn’t go over well, with many residents complaining about uncollected waste piling up on the streets.

After a record-breaking consultation with 8,000 responses, it’s clear that people want change. The council is listening and taking action to make things better for everyone.
