Dhaka: So, here’s the scoop. Bangladesh has filed a criminal case against Tulip Siddiq, a UK minister. They’re saying she misused her position as an MP to get land illegally with her aunt, who happens to be the former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Things are heating up for Siddiq. There are calls for her to resign because of her ties to Hasina, who was ousted in August after some serious protests and is now facing corruption charges.

Just this Monday, Bangladesh’s anti-corruption commission announced they filed a case against Hasina and her family for allegedly grabbing valuable land in Dhaka. Siddiq’s name came up in the case too.

The ACC director general, Akhter Hossain, mentioned that Hasina, along with some officials, allocated land for herself and her family. They’ve got documents and evidence to back this up.

According to the police report, Siddiq was aware of a deal that gave large plots of land to her family. While serving as an MP in the UK, she allegedly pressured Hasina to arrange similar land deals for her own family members.

This whole situation is putting a lot of pressure on Siddiq to step down, especially since she’s supposed to be tackling financial corruption. There are even reports that she lived in properties funded by Hasina’s allies and that she might have embezzled money in a nuclear power deal with Russia.

Recently, the UK anti-corruption commission, which includes groups like Oxfam and Transparency International, pointed out that Siddiq has a serious conflict of interest and suggested she should step back from her role related to economic crime.

Siddiq has denied all the allegations and claims she’s not involved in Bangladeshi politics. Last week, she even asked for an independent investigation to clear things up.

Meanwhile, Downing Street is backing her up, saying she’s done the right thing by asking for an investigation. A spokesperson for Keir Starmer said the prime minister has full confidence in her.

On Tuesday, government minister Dan Jarvis mentioned that Siddiq is just getting on with her job while the prime minister’s adviser looks into the situation. The final decision will be up to the prime minister.
